“Death is not the end; oblivion is.” Huang Yi-Chia draws on internet memes of botched taxidermy as a starting point for her creative work. These specimens, having lost their original forms, are caught between reality and fiction, life and death, through endless copying, reposting, and distortion. Like a fable, the work reflects a universal threshold everyone must face. Moments of disorientation and unchangeable facts are like scars from life. We constantly seek a glimmer of light at the end of a long tunnel, hoping wounds will heal on their own. We cling to the belief that a destination exists that will lead us to paradise—yet once we reach that seemingly unreachable realm, can anything truly change?
The unicorn serves as a hopeful guide, appearing in moments of confusion. It shows empathy and understanding, yet its companionship often comes across as absurd, humorous, or awkward. It is not a savior and cannot eliminate pain; instead, through chaotic, unfolding journeys, it helps us reconnect with ignored feelings, unresolved regrets, and faint sparks of hope.
This exhibition goes beyond the artist’s exploration of fundamental life questions, reflecting the shared feelings of hesitation and anxiety most people experience. Presented as a melodramatic tragedy with comedic elements, it features performances that shift between laughter and chaos, reminding us that there may never be a definitive answer to these irreversible realities. Behind the absurd and humorous façade lie themes of solitude, anxiety, loss, and hope. As we humorously follow an adventure that seems ridiculous at first glance, we also see how we repeatedly stumble, doubt, and look for ways out between forgetfulness and memory, finding the courage to begin again from nothing.

Huang Yi-Chia (b. 1998, Taipei) is currently studying for an MFA in New Media Art at Taipei National University of the Arts. Her works focus on performance art and video installations, utilizing video production, dubbing, and self-directed, self-performed techniques. Through exaggerated and humorous performances, her works respond to the evolution of contemporary imagery in popular culture. She often uses the relationship between the audience and the viewing mechanism of the artwork as an artistic strategy. Through parody and humor, she brings viewers closer to the work.
