Artist Natasha Tontey’s work often begins with the theme of “manufactured fear,” exploring speculative possibilities through myth, fiction, and history. Her practice unfolds as an ever-evolving, drifting journey, where each project expands rather than settles on a single work. In her artistic method, each piece acts as a transit point en route to the next, shaping a speculative world through practices of world-building for speculative fiction, ancestral cosmology, and non-extractive relationships between human and non-human life.
This talk will feature a conversation between Natasha Tontey and Au Sow Yee. Natasha will focus on her research methods and working process — how research, production, and world-building connect from one project to the next — and share key references and inspirations that shape her work. Au Sow Yee, drawing on her long-term engagement with folklore, visual narratives, and fragmented histories and political imaginaries, will explore with Natasha the complex interplay of ancestral presences and contemporary symbols within her imagery.
Through this dialogue, the two artists will guide the audience in considering how contemporary art challenges anthropocentrism, and how alternative life narratives and visual practices can emerge through fragments of history.
