On the surface, it is about living; underground, it is about survival.
This time the on-site work at the MOCA Cube was developed from the picture book created by 4 artists, WANG Si-Ying (王思穎), LIN Siao-Ning (林曉寧), YANG Shih-Ming (楊詩敏) and YEH Chia-Jung (蔡佳蓉). The idea arises from observing the impact and reflection on the living environment, brought about by garbage and environmental pollution; with longer average life expectancy, ecological problems become increasingly serious. However, many problems are forgotten after disappeared from the media, and the problems still remain. This exhibition followed by the story of the picture book “Sunkensapiens”, expects the audience to imagine Earth losing its control through the illustrations, in order to raise awareness on issues of waste and air pollution, and to face this problem of everyday life.
The story takes place after a century in the future. Earth was overflown with massive amount of garbage, becoming a nursery of disease and infestation. The humans that caused this have no other choice but to move underground in an attempt to survive. They have never been under the sun. They carries oxygen bottles with them all day, coexists with the rubbish, and becomes “sunkensapiens (the undergrounds)”. The story revolves around a sunkensapien teenager having never seen the surface. Driven by curiosity, he sets off on a series of adventure toward the surface.
After human destroyed the earth by the huge amount of destructive pollution, there is no place to live anymore. Thus, the new generation has no choice but to live underground to escape from the catastrophe on the surface. Those who survive without sunlight and fresh air are called ‘Sunkensapiens’.
