We have eyes, but we fail to see.
We have ears, but we don't listen.

But we should be able to feel something, right?

As an artist, I seek to create a medium that can serve as a small reminder or share the occasional touching moments in this monotonous life.

The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply impacted people’s everyday life, but we could only anxiously wait for the light at the end of the tunnel and try to return to the normal that we knew. My recent work reflects on the mesmerizing and invisible element of “wind” and also extends from my previous focus on sound. The intention is to discover the feelings and experiences between people and our environment through the minute and intricate changes observed in life’s inconspicuous moments.

The title of this exhibition, Sensational Flow, reflects on what’s currently happening around us; a sensational flow may be invisible, but it is impossible to ignore. My previous creative endeavors didn’t directly reflect on current affairs and were largely improvisations sparked by inspired thoughts and ideas that had been through a process of meticulous consideration and reflection. However, with life drastically changing in the last three years, habits that have been gradually acquired have pushed me to open up and engage in dialogues. The perspectives gained from the communication have inspired many inventive machines that as the Chinese idiom goes, “Chase the wind and clutch at shadows.” The focus is shifted back to the objects, which swing and sway in unpredictable ways due to external impact, and consequently, take on distinctive gestures.

In recent years, most of my creations have been driven by energies that may seem minuscule, and it is those delicate forces that have incited a string of thoughts. Although seemingly insignificant and as mundane as life, change is still happening, slowly and gradually.

Let’s dance with the wind and communicate using sound.

Wind is the critical kinetic energy applied in these three artworks on view in this exhibition. I have in recent years conducted countless experiments to find intricate balances between physical machines and unpredictable air currents. For example, System is an artwork that uses a sphere to explore the wind coming from all directions in the given space. Figure the Wind, on the other hand, sways along with the air currents passing through the corridor, moving the sails that are horizontally arranged up above. Lastly, Field presents tightly erected vertical blades to make the air currents visible.

Just because you don’t see, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
And because you don’t hear it, doesn’t mean there isn’t a sound.

I wish to serve as a reminder and redefine the moments when we feel changes happening in the environment around us.

Artist Biography

Wang Chung-Kun

Wang Chung-Kun was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1982, and graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Taipei National University of the Arts and then obtained a master’s degree in Technology and Art from the university.

Sound art created by Wang projects a musical quality, as he liberates the abstractness of sound and transforms it into music in figurative forms. Wang sees sound as a way to convey ideas and concepts, and the understanding of sound lies in its associated connotations and meanings. Emotions expressed through music, on the other hand, can provide us with experiences that are integrated into realistic scenarios. Psychologically, the flow of sound and music can be grasped in a rational and logical way, and at the same time, music can be experienced in ways that are sentimental and experiential, and his artworks provide experiential ways to feel and perceive, suggesting that sound can’t be translated using words because it can only be what it is.

MOCA Taipei’s principle of handling the report on copyright infringement:

1. MOCA Taipei will remove the webpage content claimed to cause the copyright infringement as soon as possible after receiving your notice, and will inform the user about the infringement via email. If the said user objects to said infringement, MOCA Taipei can provide your name, email or phone number to said user so that direct communication can be achieved to resolve the dispute.

2. According to MOCA Taipei’s privacy policy and related regulations, MOCA Taipei is only allowed to provide a user’s personally identifiable information to a third party by the request of the law or a governmental agency unless said user agrees or for the purpose of providing a service. Therefore, when you file a report, MOCA Taipei will only remove the contents causing the copyright infringement, and will not provide you any personally identifiable information of said user. If you wish to obtain the user’s information, a legal proceeding must be filed at the District Prosecutor’s Office or the Criminal Investigation Bureau, who will issue an official letter to MOCA Taipei requesting the user’s information. In the case, MOCA Taipei will comply accordingly.
