About

When making art in Taitung, artist Chia HUANG met the protagonist of her works featured in this exhibition – Po Chun HSU (also known as Ko-e) due to serendipitous circumstances. The artist entered Ko-e’s life, and collaborated with electronic musician Yi Chin HUANG and Yuanzi, enabling the writing of electronic music to take place in the field. Collaboratively, they have produced this exhibition – Cosmos Shrine, which features experimental sounds, documentary photography, and experimental videos.

By the sea in Fushan, Taitung, there is a temple without a congregation. In the temple live a mother and her son, who are both psychic. Whenever the deities descend, the mother would chant in the heavenly language to assist the souls of the deceased to elevate. The son, Ko-e, possesses the ability to channel messages from the above, which he would pass them to those around him. Ko-e is about sixty of age this year. He moved to Taoyuan when he was in junior high school, and sustained himself as a labor worker. He married a Filipino wife at forty, but their marriage only survived a short year. Ko-e’s father suffered from schizophrenia. Since Ko-e was a child, his psychic ability and unusual messages led to discriminatory jeering and exclusion by villagers. Three years ago, Ko-e’s mother fell ill. Despite his discontent, Ko-e moved back to look after his mother. It was the first time he moved back home after he left when he was in junior high school.

The work Sky Channeling revolves around Fushan Village in Beinan Township, Taitung County, and extends from the life of Ko-e to discover the treacherously mystical yet profusely poetic world that informs his common, meager everyday life. Through the work, Huang listens to the divine conversations between the psychic mother and son, which, infinite as they are, are largely overlooked by people. In the work Skin, the artist invites Ko-e to film from his own perspective, and co-creates with Yuanzi. Engaging with such marginality, the artist eagerly listens to the untamed voices that attempt to make their logic understood by the world, while searching for the image language which enables her to pay tribute to these unadulterated, primal voices.

Artist Biography

Chia HUANG

Chia HUANG is a would-be graduate from the National School of Fine Art Villa Arson, Nice (La Villa Arson-École nationale supérieure d'art de Nice) in France, and works with a diverse range of media, including photography, painting, collage, and video. She has been invited to exhibit in Taiwan and France, among which are the Rencontres d'Arles in France, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, the Eslite Taitung Story House, Young Art Kaohsiung, Tainan Photo Go, and the Taipei Performing Arts Center. In 2019, she published her photography book – Les 100 Chemins (Road). Her works have been included in various Taiwanese and French photo books and magazines. Huang has focused on the lower class, and has utilized the approach of co-creation, inviting her photographic subjects to participate in the creation as a way to formulate a perspective subversive to existing power relations, while exploring the rootlessness of people and their self-identity.

Living in Fushan Village, Beinan Township in Taitung County, Po Chun HSU is the host of Tian Hsing Temple. He has been psychic since childhood, and has the ability to receive heavenly messages to help spirits elevate. Meanwhile, he is also a professional background actor, and has appeared in multiple films. He runs Chi Feng Tea Shop and Feng Chun Real Estate, deals in peculiar rock and wood, and usually sells pomelos by the sea.

Sound design, mixing and audio editing
Yuanzi was born in Taiwan, and now lives in Taipei, where he works as an independent musician and performer. He launched his career in scoring in college, and has collaborated with multiple film animation and documentary directors. Their collaborative works have been awarded and nominated in numerous film festivals. In recent years, he has maintained his collaboration with the industry, and produced works for the productions of the Public Broadcasting Service, sound design of virtual reality productions, and various film festivals. In addition to his behind-the-scenes work, he has also combined multi-dimensional instrumental music, micro photography and projection, and the sound visualization technology – Cymatic, to develop unique music performances. Using piano as a starting point, he expands into multi-dimensional instrumental music performances, incorporating violin, shakuhachi, Indian santoor, Taiwanese yueqin, and electronic synthesizer. His music creations are often integrated with soundscape and local elements, allowing distinctive Taiwanese daily soundscape to be spread through music.

Sound design, film production
Yi Chin HUANG is an electronic musician, the curator of the Weather In My Brain Sound-Visual Art Festival at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the founder of the music label “Silent Agreement,” the founder of the Grass Music Festival, the leader of the music band “78bpm,” and a winner of the Independent Electric Music Award at the 2002 Ho-Hai-Yan Rock Festival. Huang’s documentary video gazes into the quotidian life, with an emphasis on peopled sites, including homes, communities, cultures, and ethnic mythologies. Through video, he explores the implicit and ambiguous connections between people and sites. Using sound as a lead-in to video, he uncovers the real in the fictionality of experimental sounds, and the magic of rhythm in realistic documentary video through the collision of both media.

  • MOCA Taipei’s principle of handling the report on copyright infringement:

    1. MOCA Taipei will remove the webpage content claimed to cause the copyright infringement as soon as possible after receiving your notice, and will inform the user about the infringement via email. If the said user objects to said infringement, MOCA Taipei can provide your name, email or phone number to said user so that direct communication can be achieved to resolve the dispute.

    2. According to MOCA Taipei’s privacy policy and related regulations, MOCA Taipei is only allowed to provide a user’s personally identifiable information to a third party by the request of the law or a governmental agency unless said user agrees or for the purpose of providing a service. Therefore, when you file a report, MOCA Taipei will only remove the contents causing the copyright infringement, and will not provide you any personally identifiable information of said user.
