“Parody” refers to a unique approach of art imitation that takes the original context of an art expression – such as poetry, theater, or music – and distorts it into a creation containing another set of meaning, usually filled with imitation, joke, satire, comedy, buffoonery, and even ridicule.
The essence of “parody” derives from human nature, often serving as medicine for humanity to obtain self-treatment, self-consolation, and introspection. Thus, an artistic creation in the style of “parody” is a cultural subject where every person can relate to and share in this era of globalization. In the contemporary world, the artists inspired by the essence of parody are innumerable. This exhibition attempts to make a selection among Asian artists, inviting those who are not only able to provide cultural diversity and express of their beliefs, but above all, explore the “parody” spirit that is ever-present in our daily lives.
The artistic works of “parody” differentiate themselves from ill-intended spoofs produced by discontent or nonsensical mockeries. “Parody” makes an attempt to inject complex and multi-layered ideas in jokes that are by nature simple and relaxing. The exhibition will use methods such as imitation, disguise, collage and ridicule to target a phenomenon or object with satirical representations and innuendos. The works in “parody” might seem technically simple, yet their undertones are subtle, abundant, and transcendentally superb. “Parody” is the highest of spoofs, overwhelmingly nonsensical, pricelessly ridiculous, and remarkably inappropriate!
“Parody” includes nineteen artist groups: The Blue Noses Group, Revision, and Tyminko & Mitrichenka from Russia; Agus Suwage, Heri Dono, and I Nyoman Masriadi from India; Nishio Yasuyuki, Sako Kojima, and Ernie Matsui from Japan; Qing-Song Wang and Na Yang from China; Ming Wong from Singapore; and Chun-Teng Chu, Bo-Liang Wu, Ching-Yao Chen, Yi-Li Yeh, Yu-An Liao, Mu-Chi Hsieh, R.B.T, and among others from Taiwan.
